Who else has clear backpacks besides HISD? What about Clear Creek, Fort Bend, Conroe and Spring Branch ISDs? Where else can we find jail/industrial-schools?

Metal detectors and clear backpacks may prevent "casual" violence

But a well orchestrated massacre plan like Columbine? No.

We were lucky that Harris and Klebold killed so few people. Their cafeteria bomb would have killed hundreds if it went off

Also, I can't find any with mesh/clear at Pearland ISD, Humble ISD, Katy ISD, Hitchcock ISD, Texas City ISD, New Caney ISD, Friendswood ISD, New Caney ISD, Huffman ISD, or Alvin ISD. I can't imagine that any schools in the truly rural areas would adopt them.

If they are going to require mesh/clear backpacks then they may as well require mesh/clear clothes to be worn as well. Just as easy to hide a weapon or drugs on your person. I don't see the point of this, really.

they started using them in that area in the mid to late 90's. Back then that area was infested with gangs and shootings..daily gang fights at Jackson Middle and Especially Austin High...they also took our lockers away so we couldnt keep anything in there..i dont know if they let the students use them now..dont think so..

My grandson is in high school and he's a very strong young man. However, some of these books are HUGE! And like other posters have mentioned, he is so short on time between classes that there is not enough time to visit a locker. So they carry all their books for the day or at least half a day so that they're not late to class.

Those shootings didn't occur until I was almost a Senior in high school.
If schools think having clear bookbags is going to somehow prevent another Columbine massacre from happening, they are sadly mistaken.
If some crazies want to shoot up a school they are going to do it regardless.
Up here there was a student caught at his school with a weapon. He didn't have to carry it in a backpack. Another student propped open a back door for him! With a pencil.

I will weigh his backpack when he gets home, but hubby estimates it to be around 35-40 lbs. Hardly a few books!

I totally agree about the weight of backpacks! My middle son's backpack is ridiculously heavy and he has the same problem with not having enough time between classes. 4 minutes is not enough time in a huge school.

My oldest son has been having back pain and I wondered if it was related to his backpack. It annoys me how he has to have it so the straps are pulled almost all the way out causing the pack to hang way down. I don't think this is the best way to wear a backpack. Of course, he is also taking weight lifting... so maybe that's it.

Thanks for the info. The reason I asked is because I browsed the school district handbooks and didn't find any district rule for the ones I mentioned above, which are generally thought to be the best overall districts. For them I suppose every school has its own set of rules. For HISD though, it looks like a blanket rule for the entire district.

tstone: For HISD I do not believe it's a blanket rule (in 2007 it wasn't) - there are/were some schools that allow opaque backpacks
