There's no way you can germinate St. Augustine grass from seed anyway so go get the sod from Home Depot or some other big box and cut it to the sizes you need. Water the hell out of it for about 3 weeks, however. Last I looked the sod was like $1 per 3' square.

Yep, home depot or lowes will have a 16x16 or 24x24 section. I forget the size. Water it for a couple weeks.

OK, lawn care for dummies... Do I need to cut out all the brown spots and replace them with sod, or can I hope that the healthy grass will spread and infiltrate (like socialists in the fabric of America) (totally just kidding, little Rush L. humor for you)?

I wouldnt just throw the sod out on top of the brown. You should rake it down to dirt then I spread peat moss then place the sod. Water alot! Im going to wait till Spring to tackle this since it is almost time for it to go dormant.

Check with Houston Garden centers. I think sod squares were on sale for 77 cents.

I've done that too, but without seeing what you're talking about, not sure whether you should let new runners cover it next year or cut it out and lay new sod. Secondly, if it's due to brown patch or chinch bugs, you need to treat the lawn.

If you choose to let it grow in, make sure you are cutting your lawn next year at your mower's highest setting. That will promote runners going across the bald spots.

Good luck!

Can't have your cake and eat it too with St. Augustine. Overseed it with rye grass during the winter if you want it green when St. Augustine is dormant.
