....but apparently I'm wrong.

I woke up around 2:30 a.m. with a bit of a cough. I went to the kitchen to spray my throat with Chloraseptic. Having to use the restroom, I turned on the light. I saw water all over the place and heard a thud. There was a rather large rat in the corner.

Me being the manly man that I am, I promptly ran out screaming, shut the door and blocked the bottom of the door with Mexican coke crates.

After doing a little research, I found out that although rare, this does happen. And the larger the rat, the more likely it will escape (generally, a normal sized rat will drown in the toilet as it cannot get out).

Anyone else experienced the toilet rat before? I honestly would have laughed had someone told me this was possible before this morning.

That ought to keep a few people from camping on the toilet.

I'll make sure to share the story of Houston Toliet Rats over Thanksgiving with the younger generation.

Or was the rat waiting for something to happen?

It's not an urban legend, it has happened to two people I know well - a close friend and my brother-in-law. Both incidents occurred in and around Seattle. In my friend's case the rat was splashing in the toilet so he closed the lid and was able to flush it down, but in BIL's case the rat had already climbed out of the toilet so he closed the bathroom door and called the city to come take care of it.

Eeeuw. Gives me the creeps just thinking about it.

Well, at least you didn't sit down first.

Ever since my "frog in the toilet" experience, I never use a toilet without looking first, and this post just reinforces my paranoia!

Oh, I think it'll be "stand and deliver" for the rest of my life.

Initially, I thought I had Schnauzer running around the bathroom.

Wait, what happened afterwards? Is the rat still in the bathroom?
