how are you defining "high-tech"

we have a LOT of R&D in engineering as well as medicine and aerospace. pretty darn high-tech. the term is not exclusive to computers and the internet

what do you mean like what?

NASA's R&D is done here in Houston, biotechnology and medical research at the largest medical center in the world brings in a lot of grants, money, and jobs, and I thought you worked in the energy industry?

earn a degree and post your resume online. you can pretty much do anything you want to do here

are you thinking oil shale is the only high tech in O&G?

i was thinking the other guy thinks high tech just means if you have a google or twitter office in your city.

Since when is "17th place" something to brag about? What's the point in posting that at all? Another desparate attempt at making Houston look better than the reality...
and what's the "reality" about Houston? A lot of the things that are mentioned about Houston on this website (that happen to be in it's favor) aren't a departure from reality. Just happens to be reality that some (like you) detest.

Besides, in regards to high tech jobs/industry, it's not even like the article/survey ranked Houston in the top 10 in the nation. Just highest in the state.

Nevertheless, HBJ found it noteworthy.

and why the heck is "semiconductor, computer and circuit board manufacturing" considered high tech?? my first job straight out of college was managing a group of these people QA'ing chips spit out by machines. its in a clean room with all white lab gowns but nothing we humans did were high tech. and that was in mid 90s lol. no college grad deserve that kind of a job

Tech as traditionally considered (software, chips, Net, cloud, mobile, etc) is dominated by PaloAlto region...look at innovation and wealth created in region (e.g., mkt caps of BigTechs HQd ard PaloAlto, as well as where all the most promising start-ups are based)

By that def of tech, any town in TX is a munchkin vs PaloAlto region...as are towns like Redmond, Bos or anywhere else in world

Where Hou and DFW are right behind PaloAlto in innovation is in shale oil&gas, pipelines, etc....stuff that arguably makes US energy self-sufficient for next many decades w/cheap fuel....this is where TX (esp Hou and DFW, not Aus/SA) is far more innovative than NYC or Chic or anywhere else in US or world outside of PaloAlto region

Sure, if one is an aspiring software engineer would want to be in PaloAlto region, but if want to amass wealth in energy would want to be in Hou or DFW, not CA or anywhere else on planet
