It only takes 2 to 3 years for these Christmas trees to get big enough for commercial sale -- has anyone ever thought about growing your own in your backyard? I don't know much about what grows here and what doesn't, but given that there are a few tree farms in town I'd imagine it wouldn't be that hard.

Anyone know what kinds you could grow or whether it'd just be a gigantic PITA?

I am thinking about growing a Christmas tree myself. You can order small starter plants online. Here you can find some answers for your questions:

Thanks -- that'll save me a lot of looking. I've never had any of those types of trees before -- wonder how they'd turn out. Suppose I should make a trip down to one of the local "cut your own" and give em' a look.

They're like $50. I was thinking more of the hobby / something cool to do with my kids than anything else. From an economics point, I have no problem shelling out $50 a year for a nice smelling tree

yeah, i think i'd rather grow a tree that will grow "with" my child. and look back at it and remember planting it when my son was a baby.....i know my parents did that when i was young.

although growing a christmas tree in the backyard would still be pretty cool.....

Why not decorate a living Christmas tree in your backyard or even front yard?
