I am sure he knows how to read the data, but these things always have so many variables, and I tend to agree that the differences are a big variable.
I have also heard that the way data is reported is also a major factor.

someone gets hit by a car or something in houston and it is reported as a murder while in NY it does not add to the murder numbers.

Too variable in some areas

This is interesting. One recent study has Houston tied with San Francisco and Honolulu for best personal safety. Not sure the full list of US cities that were included, seems surprising... but does indicate that it's definitely not nearly as bad as some make it out to be.

As usual, there's a major difference between how safe people feel (i.e. what these surveys measure) and how safe they actually are (i.e. actual crime data).
