Actually, Eddie Lampert is losing big money on Sears/KMart. It's understandable - while magazines have written puff pieces on what a great turnaround artist he is, the bulk of his investment gains have been from simple stock-picking (Autozone and Autonation) rather than any operational expertise. Instead of hiring big names from Wal Mart and Target, he hired a top IBM exec to head up Sears. Bottom line is that the guy got lucky on the basis of some concentrated bets and hasn't the foggiest about how to run a large retail chain. Attention to detail is what retail is all about, and Lampert lacks that attention in a big way, choosing instead to make real estate deals and mount billion-dollar stock buybacks ($6b in total).

His principal talents are probably schmoozing (to raise money from big money investors) and stock-picking. And that is why Sears is heading for Chapter 11 if Lampert continues running it. The only way for Sears to survive is for Lampert to hire a retail veteran and let him run it or sell the chain off to another investor who knows retail.

The stand alone Sears Appliance Showrooms are actually independently owned franchise stores.

I thought for sure that the dilapidated Baytown (San Jacinto Mall) would close.

What happen if I bought something from sears? My mom bought a refrigerator from Sears. She also added the 5 year warranty which is 200 or 300 more. The refrigerator is only about 2 years old though.

I believe the hardware stores have been changed over to franchises as well.
