The behavior of the parents objecting to the speech promoting education is an example of stupidity. This is another example of people living up to the stereotype about people in Texas.

This is an example of how backward and less progressive the state is. It is a shame that people are not looking at the big picture and realize the people in the state of Texas are being screwed over by its own government. Texas is one of the poorest states in the union, behind on education, and the more people live in Texas compared to other states without healthcare. Focus on that folks. If transplants weren't moving here this state would be in trouble. Companies are hiring folks outside the state because it is difficult to find qualified people here to fill those positions. I wish people would come out of their self induced comas in this state with this us against them attitude.
SOME people identify with being an American first. You have to remember that the south was invaded and conquered by the USA. I was raised to be a Mississippian. The whole state rights thing is still strong in many areas.

So if you don't like the pledge, i suggest you move your smug self to another state. Maybe one of those paradises like california or michigan would suite you - assuming you can find a job.

This thread is negatively evolving from mostly ignorant flippant remarks of whom have little regard and knowledge of Texas culture and its rich and distinct history. Key here is focused on the history of Texas and the Texas Flag (Lonestar Flag), and with that, Texas has a unique pride and remembrance of how it came to be, how the flag migrated from a Texas nation flag to a state flag, thus the Texas allegiance being practiced in schools. There is absolutely nothing wrong with our pride in Texas, and by some (most notably comments on this thread), are mistaking pride for cruel, unjustified arrogance. Texas is a bit different from its neighboring states, as some have pointed out, in that it was its own nation. This is something special, and I also feel that the very brief allegiance to Texas, is at a minimum, a deeply heartfelt and revered practice to the Texas soil that myself, and many of you, live on.

I've traveled the world, and have learned and embraced the cultures of those peoples and their practices. I've learned a lot from that and have returned this new-found understanding to our great Texas state when my military tour ended in 2001. Texas, my place of birth that I sadly ignored in my younger days and so easily waved off as a boring place that I had simply been born in.

It would be honorable for many of you to consider learning more about its history, the evolution of the Texas Flag, and exactly why we pledge our allegiance to Texas AND the USA. I would do the same for any other state, as I find every one of the locations that I have visited fascinating, and tend to quickly dive into their history, as I have done mine.

I would love to hear some remarks and educational insight from Texas history buffs and scholars to help uplift this thread into something more positive and elevating.

You made me google now.

How Texas Got It's name

Quote:
The state name originates from the Caddo Indian word "teysha" meaning "friends" Texas comes from the Caddo Indian tribe. The Spanish Conquistadors encountered the Caddo Indians around 1540 in the area of East Texas. The Caddos referred to the Spanish as "tayshas," which meant "friend" or "allies." The Spanish translation was "tejas." The Americans converted it to "Texas."
Frequently Asked Questions

I had no idea there was a town of Washington in Texas or that is used to be the capital.

Quote:
When did Texas get its current flag?

Original Lone Star Texian FlagThe current Lone Star flag design was adopted by the Third Congress of the Republic on January 25, 1839 under the administration of President Mirabeau B. Lamar. Until that time, the flag of the Republic was the one adopted on December 10, 1836, known as "David G. Burnet’s flag." The flag consisted of a large golden star centrally located on an azure ground. Although Lorenzo de Zavala had proposed a flag of blue with a white star of five points central, with the letters "T E X A S" between the star points, nothing further was done with the recommendation, perhaps owing to the hasty adjournment of the Convention at Washington, and to the loss of part of the Convention notes.
This book looks interesting.
