Does anyone know the plans/timeline for the Fulshear/Prarie Parkway? I heard its supposed to run from Freeport, along SH 36 to Rosenberg and then go up through Fulshear and connect north into i-10 and continue up to 290 around Prairie View, to alleviate truck traffic from the port of Freeport, and of course provide another N-S artery to handle population growth on the west side of town.

Well the Grand Parkway is already backed up in Cinco on an almost daily basis. Since development in Cinco will soon end or begin to add density somehow they should start on expanding it from 1-10 to Westpark in my opinion. to at least 3 or 4 lanes.

Looks like there is only room for 3 lanes. The median can only support an extra lane and a left shoulder in each direction.

Why wasn't this done 10 years ago? Considering that the growth forecasted was coming to fruition anyway.

Money. It's so hard to get money for freeways, they usually build them two lanes, and only expand them when it's overdue.

This highlights a difference between toll roads and freeways. That section of the Grand Parkway between I-10 and Westpark is the only non-toll section of 99. It will also be the last to ever be expanded.

I guarantee you if that was also a toll section, they'd be working on it now.

Why not just start a heavy rail system? Houston is already sprawling how it is, make it easier for people to transverse it without driving 45 mins.

As the difficulty of obtaining a single rail line for the HSR going into town will prove, there just isn't a lot of row left for that much space that will be needed, and our freight capacity is already at their limits so they aren't willing to share their existing rail corridors with transit, not to mention all the NIMBY areas of town that will protest any kind of rail going through or near their properties. You may get some buy in from inner loop neighborhoods that can be sold on rail transit stops being nearby, but it's certainly going to be hard putting passenger rail from 610 outwards. I'd love to see it happen though.

Wasn't there talk about 10-15 years ago about putting rail transit on the rail lines that run along 90A out to Fort Bend County, and wasn't this the reason, or part of the reason, it didn't materialize?

Tom Delay was the reason this never happened and Culberson blocked light rail down Richmond and out west passed the Galleria

The 90A project is still alive, in theory.
