Didn't you hear Romney? We don't need to worry about the very poor, they already have plenty of safety nets.

The writer of the book"What The Dog Saw" had a chapter on the homeless. He described the cost to police and medical facilities dealing with street people.
The problem started years ago when mentally ill folk could no longer be forced into institutions. They had to admit themselves to care. Coupled with that ruling, there was supposed to community based care. In many places, that never happened.
The way city and state governments deal with the homeless is arse backwards. I don't see any groundswell to change anything.

Does Christie know how dangerous wood burning stoves can be??? Not to mention the mental state of these people that would be working them. Also, where are these homeless going to get the wood? I can hear the sound of timber coming from our public parks and golf courses...

It's encouraging a Shantyville.

How did I know that the guy that proposed this was a "conservative" (Jack Christie)
Republican Houston Council Candidate Jack Christie Is Not What He Claims

Maybe because "conservatives" are the ones that back in the 70-80s used the same idea in Caracas, Venezuela to "help" people and this is what the city looks like now.

As it is, the way we deal with them is the criminal justice system and the jails, for which they were not built and were not intended.

Homeless people already build these when they can, its not like it is very hard. There are areas with many little shelters made like this all over town. I have seen a few off of i10e near intersection with 45, among other areas.

Spending money educating the homeless is stupid. Educating a 60 year old man who has been on the streets for decades is not going to turn him into a "productive" citizen. We cant even find jobs for the people who are actually looking and we spend way too much money on education for American children and we are not even getting much return for that.

Why not?

The county is paying millions a year for it to sit there and rot.

And we get no return for supporting people in other countries. Think of all the cash that goes offshore for causes that have no effect on our economy or culture. Feed the starving kids in... (name a place)... These folks are committing genocide, please send money.... makes my brain spin.

Just sayin'...

It obviously helped quite a bit as people who were homeless now have permanent houses and a community. Not everyone can affors a townhome and we will never be a nation where everyone can.

Capitalism ensures that there will always be poor people...sometimes very poor.
