Howdy,

I'll be moving from College Station to Houston in May, and as a recent graduate, this will be my first experience renting a place to live for longer than a few months at a time (I lived on campus during my undergrad, unfortunately)...

Needless to say I've been overwhelmed by the search, even with using HAR.com and other resources.

I'm originally from out of state, but I did stay in Houston last summer for an internship. I subleased near Rice University, and although I liked it okay, I'm not sure if I'd feel safe living there by myself, as a single, young woman.

I'll be working in Northwest Houston, near the 610 and 290 interchange.

I'd prefer not to live in an apartment complex due to past bad experiences, but if there are any highly recommended apartments I'll certainly still consider it. I was hoping to find a condo/townhome/duplex.

I don't need a lot of space (it's just me for now, but my fiance will be joining me w/in a year), but safety is a huge factor for me...I grew up in suburbs all my life. I'm not a huge fan of city life so I wouldn't mind living outside of downtown.

Does anyone know good areas to look for rentals under $1k?

Should I look for a realtor to help me? If so, are there any suggestions?

Thanks for your help!!
