Does not look too bad to do, maybe a weekend or two project if he has some woodworking experience. I would install the wall on the carpet and have the back of the wall flush with the existing wall in the new room, the front of the wall at the edge of the tile, and leave the arch detail on the entryway side. Then you will have a nice art niche on the short wall to put a picture in. If he is not real handy with the sheetrock/ texture work, that would be something you could contract out. The baseboards should not be too hard either. To me it looks like about $600-700 in materials if you can get a french door for $350-400. $40 for studs, $50 for sheetrock & supplies, $50 for trim, another $50 for paint and another $50 for misc other items - knobs, caulk, etc.

I'm doing something similar, but coverting our gameroom into a 5th bedroom for one of my boys. He's tired of sharing a room with his twin brother after 10 years!

Good luck on it!

Thanks for the information, I will pass this on to my husband. Doing this under $1000 would definitely be great. Good luck on your boys room also.
