A Houston Mardi Gras would be lame. When you think Mardi Gras, you think NOLA. Galveston does have a history with having Mardi Gras so that is all good - and they aren't trying to replicate NOLA, they are doing their own thing based on the cities history. It's never good to replicate other cities, it needs to be a party that the city can claim and it becomes its own thing.

As far as Mardi Gras, Houston should just leave it to galveston since that city has a history celebrating the event. It would look ridiculously contrived ( like when Dallas did it a few years ago) if Houston started celebrating Mardi Gras New-Orleans-Style.
Well it could have easily been hosted at the convention center in Downtown Houston. Houston just lacks good planning when it comes to hosting events.
