I know that this thread is over a year and a half old, but I found it so I can imagine someone searching for info on these schools might find it too. deHouston goes a little too far (eg. "the only public school I would consider is Memorial HS"), I can say that there is a good deal of truth in some of what he/she says. My son went to Poe Elementary K-3, and I have to say that Poe is extremely overhyped. I was actually appalled by the poor quality of math instruction and I was having to augment it on my own. I have had friends with kids in River Oaks Elementary's Vanguard program, and currently have a friend with a child in West University's Vanguard program. The friend in River Oaks took her child out, and the one in West U is thinking of taking her child out. These programs, starting at the Kindergarten level are nothing but vanity programs for the parents whose kids get in, the assignments are not developmentally appropriate, and it shows when you visit the classroom and see work supposedly done by kindergarteners that was so obviously done by their parents.
I would never send my child to Bellaire High School, it is notorious for having a huge underground designer drug scene. Memorial High School in SBISB is somewhat similar in having a really dangerous social element due to spoiled kids with the money and access to the wrong things. Stratford is much better. Back to HISD, some HISD schools in the far west side of the district, right by SBISD, are almost as good as SBISD schools, with Barbara Bush elementary and Westside High School being very good schools I would have little problem sending my kids to, though we did choose to live in SBISD and be zoned to Stratford.

Ok, this is weird but seems to be true. I've now met a few families whose kids have transfered over from MHS zoning to Stratford. Of course you can't transfer the other way around still. Must just be a mismatch for certain type kids.
