Alright, my first time posting on this site so go easy on me. My parents and I are moving down to Houston on a super tight budget (about $2000) to be with the rest of our family. We're gonna be staying with my sister on Conroe until we find jobs and get our own place. And to top it all off, we're doing this within the month before our lease is up. Any advice on moving tips would be greatly appreciated. And what's it like living in Houston?

Ok, I've visited when interviewing:
Friendlier and cheaper than Seattle
Humidity and high temps for 4 months in summer; temperate the rest of the year
A much less dense and more spread out city
A lot of diversification now, so it's a relatively decent job market.
Conroe is sort of nice, it's near the Woodlands, where the treed developments are well-planned and well-kept but there are many affordable good suburbs

Thanks. I can't wait to go. Kinda tired of the ” Seattle Freeze”.

You said your budget was 2000? Is that a total budget including food, medications etc, or just housing and utilities? If its the latter then its an okay budget. would be kinda tight if its the entire budget.

Things will depend on where you get jobs because prices vary by area. Home rentals are not as common here as apartment rentals, but a 1000 bucks will rent you a nice two bedroom apartment just about anywhere in the city. Utilities, including water, cable, electricity and phones should cost you another 400 bucks.

Welcome to Houston, I hope that you like it and hope that it doesn't take you very long to find employment once you get here

Default Moving from WA to Houston Tx

Hey I'm in the same boat but my lease is up in Sept. I'm having a hard time figuring out what areas to consider moving to in Houston, TX. I'm working with a medium budget and planning to sight see before I move. Tired of the Northwest.

its hard giving you advice without knowing where you are going to be working.

Leaving near your job makes life soooo much less stressful

Default Moving

Well I'm currently in the medical field and the spouse wants to attend university of Houston after he gets out of the military. Looking to pay $700-$900 rent range, maybe up to $1000.00. Something decent. Would like to be close to shopping, and such.

The areas in between TMC and UH are still rough so I would not recommend that area. The Area to the north of TMC is really nice but rather pricey. The area to the south of TMC is transitioning. New restaurants and apartments have been going up and the area is really improving. The Area to the west of TMC (more SW of it because west in Rice Village and that area is pricey too) isn't bad either.

I saw a really nice two bedroom in Montrose last year. Had nice hardwood floors and other nice upgrades. I would probably recommend Montrose over the areas I mentioned above because it has way more character, way more restaurants, stoores, etc than the others. Getting around on foot is easier in Montrose and its not that far from the Rail which would help because parking is limited in TMC so it would be a bonus if you didn't have to drive

Welcome. We moved to the Houston area after 10 years in the Pacific Northwest. The biggest difference is that Seattle is more scenic but Houston has more SUN. I could never go back to living in gray drizzly weather. If the sun doesn't come out for two days straight here, I start to have PTSD type flashbacks about living in Seattle.
