Hi: just wondering of anyone knew if the clear license plate covers are ilegal in the city or state. Someone I know got a ticket and she's wondering if she should get a lawyer and contest the ticket or just pay the fine (doesn't know how much).
Any comments are appreciated.

If any part of the bracket covers any part of any number, letter or other identifying insignia, then it's illegal.

Yes, it is possible that a clear cover could be considered illegal in Texas.

Blurring and Readability
It is illegal to attach any material or item that blurs, reflects or impairs the ability to read the state of vehicle registration or the numbers and letters on the license plate. All information must be clearly legible both day and night.

Illumination
Vehicle owners cannot attach any unapproved device, emblem or decal that creates illumination and causes interference in reading the state or numbers and letters appearing on the license plate.

Obstruction
It is not permissible to attach any covering or coating that causes a distortion of angular visibility. It may not obscure more than half of the state name and cannot alter the color nor obscure the letters and numbers on the plate.

Lawyer. for reals? Just remove it and show the judge it was taken off and they might dismiss the ticket.

Why do folks put smokey plastic over them in the first place? Never understood that. Ranks right up there with fart cans. As a side note, the fine can be up to $200.

Just my $.02,

Ronnie

Don't get it either. It's not like it's hard to clean off the front one and the rear one never gets dirty enough on my cars to warrant even a clear one.

Never understood the need for those clear lic plate covers. What are you trying to do? Keep it clean? Really????

I'm amazed how people have the nerve to drive around town with their tail lights smoked out with dark tint. Of course if I put them on, I get a ticket before I leave my driveway...these people parade around town like its all good.

Don't get it.
