My husband, myself, and our two boys are moving to Houston for a year. He will be working at M.D. Anderson and we are looking for a townhouse or house to rent within a 30 minute(ish) commute from there, that is a safe area. Out budget would be around $1300 a month for a 2-3 bedroom place. Is this possible? If so, what areas? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

do you need a townhouse and not just a house or a large apartment? your budget sounds low but the 30 minutes time frame is easy if you avoid the far suburbs. lots of neighborhoods in the city of houston that are close and safe but not easy to find something for 1300

Sugar Land, TX is southwest of Houston; about 30 minutes away.

What is hubby's work schedule does he work days and have to fight rush hour traffic to and from work? Makes a big difference on how far out you can make work with a 30 minute commute and budget.

Thanks for the replies! As far as a townhouse or house vs. apartment, it just comes down to want vs. need. We'd prefer a townhouse or house over an apartment, but safe neighborhood is the most important thing to us. Husband's schedule will vary. Maybe rush hour to work but late getting off. We aren't sure of those kids of details yet. I had heard sugarland was nice, but wasn't sure about travel time. Also hear Pearland was nice as well. We will be traveling to Houston next week and just want to know some suburbs to check out and consider. Thanks again!

How old are your boys? That's a consideration too if they'll be needing school.

$1300 a month is not gonna get you much 10miles or less from the med center if you afford $1700 a month you can rent a nice 3/2 house in Willowbend or Westbury on the south west side just outside the loop about 7 to 10 miles from the Med Center

Lots of folks who work at MD Anderson live in Pearland. The commute isn't too bad. Not sure about prices for rentals, but there are houses in these neighborhoods for rent certainly. Pearland ISD schools are good if your children are school age.

I looked on HAR and pretty much everything house wise to rent for $1300 and under is pending. It's kind of funny. Like seriously, every one.

You might just be better off getting an apartment for the time being until you can up your budget because you're not going to find much. If you just happen to find something for that price it's going to be gone in an hour.

Here's something.

Sure is kind of cheap considering the location.
