I am originally from Detroit. I moved to Atlanta for a job and got laid off. I am wondering since Houston has so many jobs if it's a good idea to move there with no job. My field is IT.

3 companies have or are going to lay off 2000 to 2500 so for the next 6 to 10 months if it gonna be kinda hard to find a job here in Houston. Now if you are willing to work at target Walmart or a restaurant then you should be able to find a job kinda easily but working at one of these jobs you will not make enough to live on your own

If you aren't in the energy sector or the medical sector I would not take it for granted that you will be able to find a job here.

What about the super low unemployment rate everyone says Houston has. Is it really that bad?

Houston is home of the energy sector which is booming. The medical industry is also strong here and inflation proof.

This is not to say that you won't find a job here, simply that I wouldn't recommend up and moving to Houston without having something in place already. Others can comment on IT sector jobs perhaps, but I don't really think of Houston as a center for IT. Austin, TX - yes.

By the way, I used to be in the field of geology, may I have opportunity to refresh my knowledge and find a job in the field in Houston? Thanks!

That may the message promoted by Slick Rick Perry and others, but many people here would disagree, including those who are unemployed, and have been for a long time.

Houston unemployment is around 8.3% and just recently ticked up. There are a few large lay offs announced for local businesses.

The majority of Texas job growth over the last few years as touted by Perry were lower end jobs such as retail and food service.
