looking for some input from anyone really, but especially those that are currently renting or rented in pearland in the recent past....

also would like to hear from other stay at home moms (homeowners too!) about thoughts on day to day safety (grocery shopping, bank errands, parks/playgrounds/other toddler activities, burglaries at home during work hours/thefts from vehicles), especially in west and central parts of pearland.

there is so much good information on this forum, i have found it very helpful. thanks!
I have lived in Pearland coming up a year and have to say crime has not been an issue. People don't know what serious crime looks like here unless you have lived near New York City. There is a rag of a newspaper (Pearland Journal) a free newspaper offered a couple of times a week which someone collects crime statistics from the police department. This makes up the majority of the paper. People who read this may become obsessed with this information and think that this is a scary place. It makes me wonder if people associate diversity with crime in the neighborhood and most of these fears are imagined instead of real. Pearland is very rural. The east side is predominately white with folks living here from when it was a small town. The west side is very diverse. Since I moved here I get the sense that most people have not been exposed to diversity and still trying to deal with it. This would be considered normal if someone moved to a different country.

I live in the Southwyck/Silverlake area of Pearland and seriously, there have been no burglaries in my subdivision in the 7 years we've been here. There have been burglaries in some of the other areas, but not close to me.

While there is certainly crime, I doubt that it is higher in Pearland than in Sugarland. I would, however, look for a house to rent rather than an apartment. There seem to be plenty of houses that are rented in our area.

There are many, many stay at home moms in our area as well as homeschooling parents. Our particular subdivision has a wonderful park that we can walk to. There are several other nice parks in the area and we see plenty of kids out with moms. I feel perfectly safe walking around during the day. We also have a nice pool for the summer within walking distance (you could do it with a stroller if you have little ones or you could drive depending). There are two or three splashpads for summer fun as well.
There are mommy and me groups and you might be able to find a playgroup near by as well.

There is a large police presence on certain roads mainly catching speeders (and when they do traffic stops they often catch criminals through that).

I would stay away from apartments with easy access to 288 mainly because these can be easy targets. Thus, I would stay away from the apartments in Shadow Creek Ranch despite the fact that I like the homes there. I am not sure if there are any houses to rent in that area.

Good luck.
I hear negative comments about Shadow Creek, but no one bothers to explain what this means. Is it not politically correct to mention why someone should "stay away" from Shadow Creek?

Your posts do make me feel better. A couple of the realtors we have contacted so far (and who seem very good) did refer us to the police website and said they would not be able to comment on crime. Why is this so?

Any other advice is welcome!
When you are settled you may want to look at buying a home in the future. $1400 to $1800 could best be invested in a home that belongs to you. This is alot to pay in rent for Texas when you look at the pay rate here. I know you are a stay-at-home mom.

Where did you live in Pearland? This is not a major city with drug dealers selling drugs on the corner or drive by shootings. I feel people really make to much out of a news story reporting criminal activity. Too many people are becoming paranoid.

I hear about more crime in Shadow Creek Ranch than other subdivs, because of proximity to 288 and the loop. Would residents or other knowlegeable people comment on that? A lot of lease properties are found in the area... Also how about houses on the far west of SCR... They are far away from 288 but closer to the landfill... Any issues with smells there?or does one have to stay close to/east of Kingsley Drive
You may want to find out when you chose a rental whether or not you are in the city of Pearland. Some neighborhoods for the post office have a Pearland address, but technically are not part of Pearland; they are in the county (Brazoria County). Southwyck is a neighborhood that is not part of Pearland because it has not been annexed off by the city. If this is something that is important to you, this information is good to know.

I just want to add if Zimmerman does not go to jail, this country will become like other countries where people are rioting and fighting police and unleashing their anger outside of the community. It will not be a LA riot because this is a case that effects African Americans throughout the entire country.

Re: the vigilante in Pearland story:

Please note that the CNN ireport was NOT vetted by CNN. It is apparently being reported by ONE source and we do not know exactly what happened. The ireport has been taken down at CNN. There is only ONE source for the story at forwardtimes.com

Vigilante Madness in Pearland...Not Just in Sanford, Not Just Trayvon Martin!

There is a court document from Mrs. Moor's lawyer requesting discovery at this article. I am watching closely to see what happens. It distresses me that this took place close to where I live. There are all races living in our neighborhoods and my own grandchildren play with all races of children.

Also, there are things I know to be untrue in the story. The Brazoria County Police do not take these things lightly.

We do NOT know if the woman claimed that the boy swerved into traffic and she hit him. We do not know if she actually said he did not belong in the neighborhood. (She might have, but we don't know). The grand jury on the case is convening this week for the second time on the case.

One thing that I do know about the go-cart situation here is that it is a dangerous one. My husband has often thought about stopping these kids and asking them if they need a license to operate them on our streets as they drive quite recklessly. He is always afraid the kids will get hurt. I know that on my own street, the younger kids ride bikes and scooters and don't always watch for cars coming around our corner.

I hope that the incident is NOT as it was reported. I know that my neighbors and I support the mother and her son who was apparently taken to the hospital and released without much in the way of physical injury, but with a lot of emotional trauma.

Pearland has had racist incidents in the past as have other suburbs of Houston, but this one hit close to home for me.

Actually someone in Houston put this story out. I emailed him. Haven't received a response yet. As a parent this is scary. I have to wonder if the picture is real. I worry more about my child being taken away by a stranger, now I have to worry about crazy drivers mowing kids down on the street. All parents should be concerned about this case.

Where in Pearland did this actually happened?
