While it is possible for someone to be sensitive to chlorine, it is very uncommon. Generally speaking you have the same chlorine level as drinking water can have. It is far more common for there to be something in the water that causes the rash, and usually a higher chlorine level will prevent that.

Totally agree with this. I spent hours upon hours on the troublefreepool.com website when I was researching getting a pool. I still go to the site to research any questions/issues that I come across and to use their chemical calculator.

Following their advice will save you hundreds of dollars on unneeded and unnecessary pool chemicals that all the pool builders and pool stores will try to force on you.

It is a great site and I highly recommend it.

This is a big time debate, even among swimming pool builders/contractors with about half on the traditional chlorine side of the argument and the other half on the salt chlorination side of the argument.

Most likely due to having a vested interest in sales in one or the other.

The only pool I have owned was a saltwater pool, as said before it is very easy to maintain. No pool guy needed, last summer I added stabilizer one time and usually a couple bags of acid a week, very easy. I also preferred the water "feel". Lots of standard non salt water pools feel over chlorinated and not real good on your skin. Salt water all the way !

Thanks for your replies! Any particular pool builder you may recommend or we should stay away from? We have some friends building a new pool now for their house (salt). Their builder is becoming a good friend to them...so I will be asking all sorts of questions before making a decision.

Just bought my home 3 months ago and the pool was already there. It was built by Laguna Pools and is a couple of years old. Seems to be pretty good. My only big problem so far is with the Hayward heater. When we bought the house, the digital control panel was out on it. Laguna replaced the panel under warranty. The panel is now out again. Not sure what is going on with it. Going to have to get Laguna out here again to look at it and determine the real root cause so that it doesn't go out again.
