Your dad's a smart man. Dallas and Austin are especially true. Nothing weird about Austin, rather boring city, trying to look for an identity. They can try and try to keep it weird, but it's pretty mainstream.

Houston, the girl who looked decent but just never stood out, never really fixed herself up. But once she did make herself up she looks Amazing and her personality tops it off. You finally realize what a jewel she is.... "marriage" material".

I don't get all the Austin-bashing by people living in Houston. I've lived in Houston for the first 24 years of my life. It's a perfectly fine city (by American standards). I've been in and out of Austin all my life because of my family out there, so I've probably spent 6 months of combined time out there, so I know it pretty well. Austin is what it is: overrated, yet still pretty great if you like outdoors activities and an abundance of local music, among other things.

I understand that it being overrated leads a lot of Houstonians to overcompensate by criticizing Austin more harshly to the point that it's unrealistic (I've heard Houstonians say it's "the worst city in Texas!"), but it just comes off as sort of insecure. Because, really, a Houstonian calling Austin boring? You or I could definitely call Austin a lot of things (overrated, not diverse, horrible infrastructure, lack of "higher arts", etc.), but boring really isn't one of them. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of things to do in Houston, it's just I have found that I always have to try harder to have fun here (having nothing in the way of enjoyable hikes or water-based activities or camping is a big difference).

I think we should be proud of our decent, diverse, underrated city and let people think what they want to about how awesome Austin is and how horrible Houston is, and not resort to hyperbole. It makes us sound like we secretly believe all the hype.

^^ Austin is a very pretty city, it has rolling hills instead of being flat like Houston. It is better for outdoor activities. It is a good city on its own merits. What it isn't is rebellious and weird like they tout it to be. It's less diverese, less edgy than houston. I get tired of Austinites and UT Austin grads telling others it's utopia and the coolest city in the world.

Really? How? Houston is a very tame city. It doesn't have much edge to it at all. Midtown, Uptown, Washington Ave, Rice Village? All we have is Montrose which is quickly becoming the next Washington Ave.

Austin screams edgy with 6th Street, SXSW, the Warehouse district, food truck scene, etc.

ahhh maybe NOW is the time to write that book about Houston that has been kept under wraps for a while. Houston has never been boring. Maybe not everyone is exposed to certain elements....but just because you don't personally live it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. That applies to any place on the planet.

I personally fled the state because TOO much excitement was there!
