Although I do share some of your pride in Houston, Pike's Market in Seattle is certainly NOT deserted and is one of the most vibrant, exciting and enjoyable places in the US. Houston would be a much more exciting place if the city developed such a market or some other kind of walking street closed to traffic. That is one of the BIG things that Houston lacks.

Can't argue that, but at the same time, I doubt that I'd ever use that market. That, versus our own roadside minority owned markets? No thanks, Pike Place.

I wouldn't speak so fast. Fresh fish, fresh fruit, fresh flowers...not to mention all the other stalls that have all kinds of handmade crafts from local artisans.

My brother lives in downtown and shops there all the time. If you live down there, people use it.

Living is Houston now. I used to work in an office building right next to the market (by the totem poles). The market is fantastic, tons of great dining, fish, produce, crafts.

I lived there. For many years. *On occasion* we used it - but not as a regular place to go. My husband worked streets away from it, and avoided it. It's hectic, and crazy crowded and everyone just NEEDS to stand around and see the throwing of the fish. It was more of a place to take your out of town guests...

Well...different preferences for different people. Some people like hectic, crazy crowded sometimes. That's a big part of the reason he lives there. Same reason I live in the North End of Boston.
But I do have to agree that the people standing around watching the guys throw fish.
