which means... I don't have your training/condition and possibly not exercising my imagination enough to see what you see, especially about houston. Right now your view of houston is a stretch to me obviously, but you never know i might develop your skill since I'm literally bored out of my mind in Houston. goodnight

'As if Houston doesn't have them'
Good grief mpope You're so defensive. I never said Houston didn't have interesting neighborhoods. I see you're one houstonian with that Houston can do positive attitude.

I could see if someone wasn't married here it could be a bit boring in nearly all of the "non-trendy" spots. But home can easily be a nice place for a person with a good career, wife and 2 dogs.

But I spoke about this because it's one thing that really stands out that separates the deep south from the "south's west" that is Houston. You don't have to have much skill to notice it in the deep South.

And actually for trivia sake, if you take the longitudinal mean of the 48 US, the line would be drawn through Katy-Brookshire, separating the southwest and the southeast. And it makes sense culturally, too:

This area is as much eastern south Texas as it is southern east Texas.

mpope, pwright is cool by me. He is actually quite fond of Houston (or at least was at one point). He was in Houston about 3 or 4 years ago and had a bad experience with his car being towed. I know that sucked. He said some time ago that he was thinking of moving to Houston but decided not to because he wanted to help out his mom. He's like me because he also isn't too fond of the downtown foleys/macys store in Houston because it definitely needs updating.

Hopefully once the Pavilions gets built, we'll see if Houston's downtown might get up and rolling like downtown Seattle!

I presently live in Houston and find that it is hot, humid and racist. The cost of living is much cheaper than most places, and you have to drive in order to go anywhere around here. Houston has not mastered their mass transportation system. I worked for an attorney who lived here for several years and she JUMPED at the opportunity to move out of Houston when the opportunity arrived, and has not regretted her decision. Another problem here is that there are not enough jobs here to accommodate the population. A few people I know had to leave Houston in order to find work, my husband included.

I'm originally from New York, and plan to return there. You don't realize how much you took things for granted, until you move to a place that doesn't offer anything near what you had.

The remark made by that person about ... "Northerners trying to hide their ugly feelings" ... well, that's a new one! If anything, Northerners are well known for telling people exactly how they feel! We don't have a problem with that! What I experienced here in Texas is that people will tell you one thing to your face, then turn around and say something else. I've enountered more hyocrits down here than anywhere else. That also goes for racism. I agree it is everywhere, but more abundant in the south.

I've heard that Seattle is very nice, the weather much nicer than Houston (even with their rainy season which I understand lasts for a season). I plan to move back to New York because I miss the energy and excitement. Here in Houston, there is none. I don't care for having to drive everwhere to go anywhere, and I don't care for the long hot, very humid summers (especially dealing with the mosquitos!). If you didn't have sinus problems before, you will after moving down here!

Good luck with your decision and move from a diehard NewYorker!

I think your post stinks of personal bias based on sour grapes. You seem bitter by some things that happened to you and/or your husband while you were in Houston. One person's troubles doesn't make an entire city a terrible place to live. I personally couldn't imagine choosing New York over Houston -- dirty, overpopulated, worse traffic, blizzard-filled winters, did I say dirty?, etc. I know Houston's public transportation isn't great, but it's actually better than a lot of cities, and I would rather drive places in the comfort of my own car than have to rely on public transit to get everywhere -- it's more time-consuming and it's far less comfortable...to each their own I guess.

i'm not a diehard newyorker/northerner but we're definitely going back too. one thing worse that nothing to do is having no sign that things are changing, no weekend getaways, no real change in season. I dont have much to look forward to in Houston, I feel sorry for the kids not having anything to look forward to. no *beach* season, no mega-theme park season, no fall faliage/camping/hiking/scenic drive season, no snow/ski season, no schedule dam realease, no watergun fights on the river etc. kids remind you when its time to go and theyre a blast to be with in these little getaways.

So far my seasons in houston are based on what fertilizer home depot recommends to use on my st. augustine grass.
Is it Scott's Winterguard season yet?

As a traveler who has seen all this country, do to work related projects. You may want to consider this about Houston, and also consider ive been traveling and working through cities since 1993.
Houston, will rate #1 in all the negatives of life, the quality of life vs seattle and houston are so great. Texas is over grown and can meet citizens needs, the traffic in Hou just rate #1 for highest cost to commute, heat, careless drivers, air quality, health care and crime..
Houston gets the # 1 for all, hands down SEATTLE! Good Luck!
