Hopefully someone out there will be willing to assist me this time around. Can someone PLEASE let me know any areas, (recommend zip codes/complexes if possible), near Alief Montessori, 12013 6th Street Houston, TX 77072 OR in SE Houston that are decent to rent a 2- or 3-bedroom in the range of $800-1000? Coming from Milwaukee, WI I always hear and have even used websites to see the cost of living comparison. Housing is always shown to be 16-20% cheaper there. So seeing so many ppl on other posts say you can't get a nice place in that range is kind of odd because it'd suggest I have to pay more to get more there, when everything else suggests the opposite.
people outside of the state have this belief that we just live on a few bucks a day. just like anywhere else in the country a "nice" 2 - 3 bedroom apartment or home in a "nice" area is not going to be cheap. 3 bedrooms is a pretty big place. SE houston is gigantic. if you want to be close to that school but in the SE you'll have a hell of a commute.
the area you are looking at - where Alief Montessori is is not in a good neighborhood (at all).
you can find condo apartments that owners rent out in Westchase (Richmond and Gessner area) for two bedroom around $900 (this was 4 years ago may be different now). I lucked out and years ago had a pretty good place where most condos were kept by owners and was a gated complex. rents are up all over and i imagine nice places in that area go pretty fast. the apartments near by where i lived in Westchase were all base at $1,000 for a 2 bedroom
Westchase is a fine area. You can rent in Sharpstown which would also be close to where you are looking. Some people say it is dangerous there, but some people really like it. I'd be wary of any large rental areas in the neighborhood though.
IMO $800 is bare minimum for a nice apartment in the city and immediate outlying area and that's a one bedroom. closer to the city rents are much much higher for nice
edit: you can also look to rent in the area called Mission Bend or Four Corners. I wouldn't call it a decent area, but it would be close to the school (farther than Westchase or Sharpstown). You could find at least a 2 bedroom in that price range or a rental home.
Houston in general is very tricky compared to segregated cities like Milwaukee. Houston can have nice areas right next to bad areas. Or a nice apt complex right next to bad one. That school's address is in a crappy, dumpy looking neighborhood, but just north of Westpark drive is a really nice area. In fact Royal Oaks is one of the nicest areas on the west side. Westchase is a decent area. I'm on the far west side of Westchase, somewhat close to 77072. Straight south of that school is a not so good area. Parts of SW Houston has really high crime. SE Houston kinda suck IMO, just not much there to do and commute to 77072 could range from kinda sucks to really bad. I would look in Memorial (N. of Westchase), Westchase and Galleria area. You'll have to pay more in the Galleria area. Buying a house is cheaper in Houston compared to MKE, but rent is the same, or even more depending on amenities.
Yaaaaay responses! I was only looking at that school if I could find a decent area to rent near it, otherwise I'd just stick to SE Houston for schools and everything else. I found nice LOOKING apartments near there, only to read all of the reviews and have the daylights scared out of me LOL. Before I lost contact with a friend of mine, she relocated to SE Houston and rented a 2br, 2ba place w/ laundry facilities, a pool, gym and view of the lake for $800. In Milwaukee, $800 can get you a 3BDR, 1.5 BA townhouse in a borderline ok area (because rent assistance and low-income renters tend to overpopulate those areas after awhile) or a duplex/full family in areas I would avoid completely. So in my search, I've found beautiful places in Houston, but the reviews of the areas from tenants were horrible. That's why I've turned to the forums. I'm not a resident and could be easily fooled by the apartments themselves with no knowledge of the neighborhoods they are in.

Don't they though? LOL.
But Houston's no zoning makes it not like the rest. "Nice" is walking distance from not so nice.
Housing IS cheaper but that doesn't mean you're good in any direction. We have really nice, great, good, bad, really bad, OMG don't go there areas just like everyone else.
But problem is all of those areas are within a small radius from each other. On foot, you're in each one within 30 minutes
Ahhhhh I see. Now, I'm no stranger to bad areas. I have to go in the not-so-good areas here in Milwaukee daily just for friends and family members. I just don't want to LIVE in one. Had I been moving alone, it wouldn't concern me so much. But with two girls, 3 & 8, I don't want to have them in an area where they can't play outside and be safe because of extreme violence and such. I understand every place has crime. Where we are now, we are literally on the border of the city in Wauwatosa. It's nice and quiet, there's a park across the street, and neighbors can be seen walking their dogs at all hours of the night. Walk east 5 blocks and insurance rates go up, police patrol regularly and shootings are frequent. I won't even stop at the gas station down there. So being in a bordering area wouldn't be a big problem to me. I just want to be in a decent ENOUGH area with a quality apartment.
