Houston. It's 30 miles away for cultural activities rather than driving 300 miles across the desert to get to L.A.

The Palmdale/Lancaster, CA area is the 2nd most populated area in the Mojave Desert and I would rather live there because of the draw of L.A.

You probably waste your time on him. It's not helpful to the OP anyway as he's trying to move FROM Vegas to Texas. From what I see he (David) seems to do little else but complain about Houston while trying to convince others and maybe himself that places he's never lived before are all better.... now even resorts to try to discredit other posters by insulting them. Why feed it, just report.

I've yet to see a place where David Dollar has not told exactly the way it is, and spoken the truth, and stated what needs to be heard. Kudos!

The OP asked what to expect. I am just hoping to get him mentally prepared. Maybe he doesn't enjoy fun activities. I have already proven that for every negative thing I say about Houston I say 3 positive things. The poster I was speaking with only posts things pubbing Houston and refuses to acknowledge that certain cities are better than Houston in certain things. Obviously Houston has a much better job market than Las Vegas. However, to argue that there are more fun things to do in Houston than Las Vegas is not very realistic.

There's the great high-end, sophisticated cultural attractions/activities of Houston that Las Vegas simply cannot match.

Houston's nightlife is actually more varied and has greater variety of settings than Vegas. Vegas lacks the different broad looks of Houston. There's every format from Richmond Strip to White Oak to downtown to Rice Village to Midtown to the Montrose...

The "glitz" of the Vegas strip has never been a personal "it" factor for me. Vegas is just more "high profile" and "24 hour" (and those factors aren't even really important to most average reasonable folks.)

Living in San Diego, the only reason we would go to Vegas on occasion was to visit my wife's friend who lives there. But there's really nothing to do out there but visit the Strip. Anything else is a joke compared to the REAL diverse metros.

Indeed, Vegas is a ONE-DIMENSIONAL and artificial place compared to the more diverse Houston area. There's every distraction from the powerful Theater District to diverse shopping (Houston has every nearby format from Heights-Victorian style to off-beat Old Town Springs style to soaring ultra-modern Galleria style. Vegas...not so much) to Kemah Lighthouse to Hershey Park.

Vegas, pretty much is all "Strip." Fremont St. is fun...but if there's not much else beyond that format...what else is there to do in Vegas? Oh, a visit to the Hoover Dam.

The other stuff generally...merely concomitant with the superficial tourist Vegas experience, nothing that can beat the quality of a Wortham Center or Cockrell Butterfly Museum or the raw personality/simplicity of the Bayou Walk. (For something close to an actual waterway walk, you can go the Venetian in Vegas, lol.)
