Default Moving from Las Vegas, NV to Katy, TX What can I expect?

We plan to move from Las Vegas, NV to Katy, TX at the end of May 2012. For the most part Las Vegas, NV offered nothing more then hardship. What is the job market like in Katy, TX and surrounding areas? I know the cost to live in Katy, TX is at least a couple of $100 more for renting but that's okay if it's going to help aid in getting a better opportunity versus how bad things are in Lost Wages, NV I have moved all over the U.S. from Kansas to Florida to Las Vegas, NV and now Katy, TX/Houston. I hope the move is worth a change because Vegas sucks like no tomorrow with all their fake crap and 16% unemployment. No wonder it has the highest abandoned rate over any major U.S. city in America. A one way industry of alot of nothing but dust! Even the trees here look poop brown and lifeless and not organically green full of life. How damn depressing this place is.

More Grass =p.

Job market is better when compared to Vegas. You and everyone else are moving to the few states that are actually growing any jobs. (don't believe the government fudged national numbers)

That being said unemployment rate is still fairly high here due to the influx of people. Be prepared to work hard to find a job.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I've worked hard running my own e-tailer online business for the last two years. so I'm ready for a change for the better anyway.

Don't just move here thinking you will find a job. Finding a job is still very hard just like everywhere else. Our economy is good because of oil & gas and easy to find a job in that industry but requires a background in that industry or an engineering degree.

If you can't find a job where you are at, what is about Houston that is going to make it any different? Maybe find the job first then move????

I would strongly disagree, as would many others, outside of the specific forms of entertainment and activities Las Vegas is known for. I don't know what you are basing your opinion on.

I agree with AK123, There's tons of things to do here in Houston/Katy area. Many shows to see, music venues, festivals, parks, museums. If you do relocate to Katy and don't mind an hour or so drive, you can pretty much open your options with things to do like the Kemah Boardwalk, get out to the Woodlands Mall area, City Centre, Downtown area......

As far as econmy goes, as jtothemak said earlier in this thread, oil & gas industry is a great influence in this area. With that being said, its not easy to get into the field without expirience, skills, and a bit of luck or maybe a connection or two.

Good luck on your journey. I think you'll like it down here.

I work part-time now and run a full-time online successful business. I just want a change or new outlet. I look at Houston has an industrial market with growth. I might go to school or focus on another cool business idea. Vegas didn't do anything for me that i couldn't do for myself. The hardship was more less the first 2 1/2 years then i got smart and starting working for myself and changing the game plan on my income and that's what got me ahead. I want to move and try new things beside live here for another couple of years. I like them good old folks from Texas. They are so nice to talk to and they smile at you which is odd. If you've been living here in this cold town getting a smile from someone is not normal in these parts. It was Kansas or Texas and i've always wanted to try it out in Texas so here I come.
