A lot of students rent in Eastwood and bike down Cullen or Lockwood to UH, right across 45. Not sure if a bus line runs down either of those streets, but surely the Metro site could give you that info.

From what I could see, UH seems to be making a big effort to move up academically and be more of a traditional campus.

Is UH trying to "gentrify" its surrounding area? Just seems odd that when I check appropriate apartment locations, bank locations, even some stores, they all seem to bunch in west Houston.

I think there's a slow effort to expand UH's reach into the surrounding neighborhoods, but there is a long way to go and lots of local resistance to gentrification in that area. I wouldn't hold your breath.

The west side of Houston is the energy corridor, it's where the money has always been. But there are great areas beyond that. People mentioned Eastwood; the east side of Houston is rapidly changing. In-the-loop (within loop 610) neighborhoods like Montrose, the Heights, Museum District are great and have been for some time. So not all the action is in west Houston. There are tons of apartments in town.

Just my opinion, but a lot of resistance to gentrification of areas around UH comes from property owners who are afraid that any improvements will make their property taxes go up (and they will). Some are absentee landlords; some are first-time homeowners who bought their houses cheap decades ago when their once-nice neighborhoods were sliding downhill.

Improvements -- yea, even unto gentrification --will take place. The Great Recession slowed things down, but with an improving economy and the construction of the University Line, it's just a matter of time.
