Ok, if half day kindergarten's are impossible to find in Houston, then I am in search of play based kindergarten... I do not consider the public schools play based so I guess I am considering private. Any suggestions? Thanks

You're going to have a hard time finding that. Parents demand a lot of their schools, and schools, especially private, tend to respond to that with a fairly rigorous curriculum. Maybe a Waldorf school?

I can say from experience that son #2 has a LOT more fun in kinder in public school than #1 did in Montessori, which was serious work. The kinder teacher in the public school does a lot more fun stuff with the kids.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Good to know that some public schools may be more play based then private schools like montessori. You are bang on with the waldorf suggestion, my child is currently at a waldorf school... Im just considering other schools because Im not sure I want to continure with waldorf past kindergarten.. so I figured it was worth looking into elementary schools with play based kindy's but I suspect those don't exist here...

Alief, and I think Stafford offer half day kindergarten, but I would not put my child in either.

A real Montessori program (AMI) is not academic. It is too late to apply for 2012, but look at the website for the Post Oak School.

In what part of town do you live?

Check out Blossom Heights near Fondren and Westpark. They are nature oriented and learn through play. Not sure if they will have a K program. It's mostly preK kids. Houston Preschool | Child Care | Pre-K in Texas

Check out Grace School. It's in the Westchase District so according to where you live, it might be worth taking a tour. It's full day kindergarten though.

You'll get a lot of negative, judemental responses that you need to stay away from play and focus on cirriculum. Dunno what it is about the competitive nature of parents on this website, but it prevails and I, for one, don't get it.

Good luck finding something play based. Good for you.

My child is in a play based Kindergarten, which is located in the Woodlands. It follows the Reggio Amelia philosophy, and both of my kids enjoy being there.

My daughter teaches Reggio Amelia in NYC. It is amazing what little kids are learning while most adults think the kids are playing.
