Nothing good happens when you don't pay bills you owe. You either live a life where you pay what you owe, and do your best to live within your means, or you constantly try to get away with dodging what you owe, and spending money you don't have. If you do the former, your life will be much easier and happier in the long run. Far fewer hassles.

In my case, I've had an EZTag for years. But if I was starting out today, I'd have to take a serious look at it.

As for the OP and his question, you get thrown in debtor's prison if you don't pay your toll fees.

Bought a new car, forgot that I didn't have the EZ tag on it.
I got my toll violation invoice, the toll amount was $4.25
Since I drove through 3 toll plazas I get charged $11 for each plaza I drove through
so the total is $33 + 4.24 = $37.25

That is a s... lot of money for such a small mistake.

I am currently fighting them for $100 in admin fees. Supposedly I got two notices in the mail in October 2015 for 5 tolls for a total of $2.50. Last week I get a final notice from their collection agency where they tacked on a hefty $100 for my $2.50 in tolls. If I don't pay within 20 days they have threatened to add more fines and fees and a possible suspension of my vehicle registration. The problem is that I moved in June of 2015 and never got the first 2 notices and so had no opportunity to simply pay the tolls. I am currently waiting for them to complete their 'investigation' so that the fees will be removed.

If you have an EZTag account, call them, and they will drop it to just the normal toll charges.

As long as you have an account (and it sounds like you do), they understand that new vehicles often don't have the tag right away. Since you're used to driving thru toll stations, they drop all fees, and only charge the actual toll.

However, if you never had an account, all fees stand as is. On the grounds you didn't used to use the toll roads, why would a new car change that.

You do get a short grace period so if you call the toll office when you k ow you've gone through one, you can pay by phone for the exact amount and be done. Wait for a bill and the fine fees are included.
