In texas public schools, it doesn't matter whether you teach high school chemistry or kindergarten, you will get paid the exact same salary. the only difference in pay scale comes from the number of years experience in teaching, and whether you have a Masters or Phd (which usually pays a couple of thousand more for each degree per year).

i believe the cy-fair district (northwest houston, not your area) was offering 42K starting salary. i'd expect that salary for relatively new teachers w/ little experience. i'd imagine your wife would be offered a lot more.

for what it's worth, cy-fair is an excellent public school district in houston.

Many Texas public schools do pay stipends (usually around 1 to 3 K a year) for high demand/critical positions such as math, science, bilingual, and special ed. So the salary is technically the same, but they are receiving the stipend on top of that.

I am a teacher. Here is the low-down for the Houston area:

Elementary/Pre-K not in demand. It is over-saturated, even in the rougher areas.

Bilingual-still in demand but dwindling. ACP students are steered toward bilingual to meet needs.

6-8 Math and Science has a decent demand.

9-12 Math and Science, walk up, introduce yourself to the principal and you probably have the job

Each district has its ups and downs. If I had to go top 3 for best and worst it would be:

Best:

1. Spring Branch
2. Katy
3. Cy-Fair

Worst

1. North Forest
2. Alief
3. Most (but not all) of HISD

If you have any more questions, please let me know.
