Contempt of court is ridiculously over used and ridiculous in this case. The judge is an unmitigated ******* in this case and should be voted out ASAP. He is not attempting to mete out justice, but instead push his authoritah down on those he deems beneath him. It's a travesty.

Only in America can a corrupt Republican judge sent a 17 year old honor student to jail for being tardy.
Sad to hear that things haven't changed in MC over 20 years.

A company I worked for back then tried to do some business there in the 90s and there was a feeling that things weren't quite "right". My boss described the experience as having a "Deliverance" feel to it.

I suspect it might be hard to find a public official there that wasn't corrupt regardless of party affiliation.

I'm wondering why her school didn't seem to be involved in her court appearance. Surely a councilor or teacher was aware of and had some empathy for her situation.

I understand that, but it doesn't make it right. In this country, there is no reason why her brother needs to be supported by her to attend college. There are plenty of options on paying for school (loans, work study, part time jobs)... including attending a cheaper community college for the first two years. This is a family with it's priorities seriously out of whack... which again is why I say the parents/guardians are the ones who need to be held accountable.

I think it's great people are sending her money, but I seriously question whether the money will actually help and or be used by her.

I bet she has better grammar than you.

You're being really mean. She's 16 and managing a lot... maybe she made a bad decision here or couldn't do what the court ordered for some reason. That doesn't make her stupid.

But I'm sure it feels good to judge and insult her, so just go with that.

Oversleeping does not indicate a lack of intelligence. However a judge sentencing a 17 year old honor student to jail for oversleeping, does indicate stupidity on the part of the judge.

I don't get it. If a D student was tardy all the time and truant, we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

I might. The mandatory public education system is an unmitigated failures in certain parts of the country and ticketing someone for not participating in the farce still rubs me the wrong way.

To be fair to the judge the article states that she is very shy and did not speak up in her defense the first time around.
