The cert can be had in one year. You can even get with a storage facility making close to 20/hr starting out and just get experience. Then after 3-5 yrs try to get on with Exxon, Chevron or any other big dog.

I got the cert and got on with a Pipeline company completely green and made close to 90k just in my 3rd year with them. The work is easy but it's very easy to turn 250k barrels of Diesel into Transmix. My father and brother work as Process Operators and both have the Cert as well (they got it when it was just a 5 week course). But they work for the big dogs and gross well over 100k a year.

I wouldn't want to do anything else but this. JMHO, working Mon-Fri sucks no matter the pay (to a point of course).

True. I don't get people who brag about their pay, but work like 100 hours a week. No time really to just enjoy life and their money.

You have to "know people" and most don't even bother with the certificate now--it seems like degree AND experience or don't bother My two-year degree didn't get me into a plant, but it did get me into a storage terminal over in Bayport.

If I was working only nights, I would have been fine with it. Working enough 28-day months wore me out in too many ways. All work and no play/rest...you get the idea.

I went back to school, got a bachelors and work 4-10s now.

My family is in the Beaumont area where the only economy is the refineries, and several of them do this job. Although none of them make that kind of money. However, I believe everything you say because my brother says his employer is having a hard time keeping operators since the refineries that are expanding can easily pay +100K for experienced people.

I've been to both (Celanese made 3 but they sold/left that place to Petro United) on that road and practically lived in them when I did inspection work. I can honestly say when I was looking to get in, those types of places were off my list. Was it Baytank or Petro United?

I might be looking to get on one of them one of these days but I enjoy not having to wear a hard hat, FRCs or working around high pressure/temp piping with nasty chemicals. Hardest part of my job is climbing tanks. And the stress of being responsible for millions of gallons of refined products that gets loaded over our rack or sent up the pipeline.
