After thinking we were moving to Dallas from Chicago, we have now been told it may be Houston. But Houston for 5-7 years. Wanting to buy, NOT rent, a home in a neighborhood which has a lot of turnover (at least based on history - with this economy, who can predict?) so that if we have to sell in a few years, we won't find ourselves not able to easily sell a house.

Looking to spend $600-700K, will have one in elementary school and one starting high school. Would consider a townhouse. Either private or public schools. Urban or Suburban.

Job is in the heart of downtown, so commute will be considered.

Thoughts?

if you have a household budget where you can spend anywhere from 600-700K for a home, then you will not face any of the major issues that most people have who have limited means. You can live in the Heights, which is close to downtown, but the schools are not great(unless you go private), you can live in the Memorial area or any of the I-10 villages(Hedwig village, etc), Bellaire, West University Place, Rice Village or even something on the lower end in upper Kirby is not out of reach.

If you want to live a little and take the commute, then definitely consider the Woodlands, Katy, Sugarland, Pearland, Friendswood or Clear Lake area as they all have homes that would fit your desired spending level....

good luck on everything and welcome to Houston.

It really depends on the lifestyle you want and the type of commute. 77079 was mentioned from your typical west side fist bumpers and the area is nice, but the area is pretty suburban in style and nature which comes with a hell of a commute. At rush hour driving to downtown from that area can take an upwards of an hour. Also restaurants and amenities are pretty limited. With your budget I would recommend the inner loop like the heights or somewhere just outside like in meyerland. You will get a nice house and be close to the culinary and cultural center of Houston full of shopping, museums, and independently owned eateries.
