I've been to kyu kaku (spelling?) in LA and NY and can't find something like it in Houston. I've done Korean bbq but it isn't the same. Any recommendations?

No. This is Houston, not LA. Surely we are very diverse but we do not have a Little Tokyo neighborhood.

We have much to offer in the way of international cuisine, but most "Japanese" restaurants cater to trendy, mainstream conceptions and not authentic food. There are a (very) FEW exceptions, though.

Most japanese restaurant here are owned by other nationalities other than Japanese.
I too, would love to find a good yaku niku and shabu shabu restaurant. There surely must be one in Houston?
For that matter, I wouldn't mind finding a cheap conveyor belt sushi place either, they always make me laugh.

Theres a conveyor belt sushi place on hwy 6 near 290 but the sushi is not of very good quality.

Some places like Hot Pot city and places on Bellaire that are not Japanese (they are Vietnamese or Chinese) offer shabu shabu, but I cant speak as to how good they are..

I don't think you're supposed to equate conveyor belt sushi with good quality. I go for the absurdity of it! What's the name of that place and do they have an actual conveyor belt running around the place?
Hot Pot and similar chinese estabishments are good but not really shabu shabu.

Webster in the Clear Lake area burbs has a Japanese element still true to their Texas roots. There are a few independent restaurants here that may be worth trying, not sure how any of it compares to anywhere though.
