I will drive from LA to Houston alone. I have never driven this far before. I am a little nervous. Will there be motels along the highway? Do I need to make reservations? Are there dangerous highways I need to be aware of -- steep downslope, tight turns, high elevation? Do I need an extra container of gas? Thanks.

Thats a pretty straight forward drive, given than you are taking I-10 all the way. La-Phoenix-Tucson-El Paso-San Antonio-Houston. The only parts where you might be in the "middle of nowhere" is when you cross the desert in parts of CA, AZ, NM and West Texas, but I-10 is a cross country interstate, so you will always be not too far from a truck stop, motel, hotel or gas station. I would be concerned if you were driving in parts of Nevada, where you can drive 30-40 miles and absolutely nothing, but this is nothing like that. When driving long distances like this, try to break the road trip down into smaller routes and focus on the smaller routes one at a time At first, just be concerned about getting to Phoenix, then when you get to Phoenix, stop at a gas station, take a break, then think of Tucson, when you get to Tucson, do the same thing, and so on, until you get to Houston. Good luck!

Not too much to see between Cal desert and San Antonio. Very boring drive, I worked 3 summers in CA while going to school at UT-Austin - I drove at night and slept during the day. Major Interstate, much traffic and many trucks, no cell coverage blackouts, lots of gas, restaurants, hotels etc.

Nothing to be worried about except boredom. Get some good books on CD - you'll do great.

No, prob. I have driven that route. It's long and boring, but the furthest point between gas stations is only about 60 miles through New Mexico and west Texas. There's signs that will tell you how far to the next services. It takes me 2 days long days to drive that route, about 14 hours each day.
