And Frontier Airlines - I like them, but it's just a domestic carrier that gets you to Denver. You can do that on

Just the kind of response I was expecting LOL!!!

The last I checked Frontier flies to other places besides Denver... so you can get off the plane and get on another one and (I know this is ground breaking news to you) fly to another city besides Denver!! Wait, kind of like United!... people have to fly to Houston to do just what Frontier customers do... get on another plane to continue flying to another city! Hmmm... interesting.

Turkish Airlines is a good alternative to get to Europe and the Middle East. By Turkish Airlines flying to Houston that means Houston is becoming even more awesome than it already is!!

P.S. I actually love Houston and that includes both IAH and HOU airports haha

Safety records are a tricky thing. You have to look at international vs. domestic safety records (in many countries, the standard for safety is different for domestic flights vs. what is required for international flights). You also have to look at when events occurred.

In its history, Turkish Airlines has had 21 crashes. Of those, 3 were on international flights. Most were pre-1980.

There have been two accidents since 2000. One was a domestic flight where nearly everyone on the plane was killed in 2003 or so. The other was a crash in the Netherlands in which 9 people died in 2009.

In any case, main point is that Turkish Airlines record since the 1980s and on international travel is not particularly startling. In fact, Turkish Airlines is increasingly being recognized as a quality airline for international travel.

United Airlines is cutting nonstop service from Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport to Paris and several other cities, as it continues to make good on its threat to cut service at Bush because the city approved Southwest Airline's proposal to open Hobby Airport for international commercial flights.

Beginning in September when the Chicago-based carrier moves to its fall schedule, it will suspend the daily, non-stop flight from Houston to Paris that Continental Airlines began offering in 1992. United merged with Houston's former hometown carrier in 2010.

It's also cutting other destinations now served from Bush, including Waco; Greensboro and Asheville, N.C.; Toluca, Mazatlán and Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Mexico; and Aruba. Service to those locations is a mixture of mainline and United Express regional service.

The last flight to Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport will leave Oct. 15.

United spokeswoman Mary Clark said United had continued to offer service to the locations, all of which she said are unprofitable, but was prompted to discontinue after the Houston City Council's approval of Southwest's proposal to serve international destinations from Hobby starting in 2015. The Paris market hadn't been profitable for more than two years, she said.

"With Hobby operating internationally, we don't feel we have the same growth prospects at IAH we feel we had in the past," she said. "So we don't expect these flights to become profitable."

"Our most prudent path is to eliminate the unprofitable flying now rather than continue to lose money."

United will be contacting passengers who already booked flights on those routes to offer refunds, Clark said. They still will be able to book flights to Paris from Houston, but will have to connect through Chicago, Washington D.C. or New Jersey.

Once again, linking this to Hobby is pretty stupid. This is just United throwing toys out of the pram with flights it was going to cancel anyway.

Which I bet will happen within ten years, maybe five. One thing for sure, Houston will be alive and strong long after United is but a footnote in aviation history. United is going to ultimately lose their little pi$$ing match.
