I could be wrong, the plans I refer to are some I saw back in 08. I just don't imagine tunnels being financially possible anywhere else.

lol to the person who left me a reputation comment.

I'm looking at these plans, and they're saying how Houston really needs these tunnels for hurricane emergency purposes.

45 has been torn up one way or another since I moved to Texas in 1978. I swear, it's the same guys in the same orange vests leaning on the same shovels looking into the same holes for over 30 years.

As for tunnels, I wouldn't go into a tunnel to escape wind and rain under any circumstances. Drowning doesn't sound like fun. Can you imagine those tunnels during Allison? I know she wasn't a hurricane, but ..... that would have sucked.

Just sayin'...

Ronnie

If they actually go through with this.... I can't IMAGINE what the traffic would be like while they're building it.

You're right. I think the plan would be to finish the Hardy Toll Rd all the way to downtown first to open up that avenue for traffic.

They definitely need to do something about 45 though. Especially with more and more growth to the South and North of Houston. It's heavily traffic at all hours.

Ok, who's the genious that came up with the idea of the tunnels?
There's something called "elevated highways" that should be much cheaper

By the time they ever got anywhere NEAR completion, we'd be driving George Jetson mobiles.

Tunnels allow the city on top of them a better feel. Elevated freeways and grade freeways cut the city apart and isolate the sections. Sunken roadways do the same, but tunnels can be made much more flood proof as I think the article pointed out. The problem with tunnels is lights, emergency exits and other items HAVE TO WORK or else terrible things can happen that aren't as bad if it was an open freeway. So much more expensive to build and maintain.

The website was so interesting when it went into details about the tunnel situation.
