Default Nice Expansion Plans for I-45

These are some awesome plans for I-45. What do y'all think about them? I-45 expansion update: No imminent progress planned | Home in the Heights | a Chron.com blog

http://www.i45parkway.com/i45-concept.htm

Quote:
The proposed parkway & tunnel concept consists of:
  • Two large diameter tunnels with six traffic lanes per tunnel. One tunnel for each direction. These roadway tunnels are to be toll only facilities.
  • Relocation of existing HOV traffic into the tunnels allows to implement high capacity transit rail to be place in the center of I-45 extending from Pierce Elevated to Greenspoint Mall.
  • Eventually the existing I-45 main lanes can be reconstructed into a system of limited access express streets similar to Allen Parkway and service roads reconstructed into boulevards. This would enhance ridership of rail located in the middle of the corridor and development of transit oriented development.
  • In case of hurricane evacuation the twin tunnels can be used as emergency shelters housing over one quarter of a million people.

It looks nice. Hopefully it's built because it's so different for a southern city.

Also, from this info, looks like they are considering rail expansion as well. Have those rail expansions been proposed and approved?

I have some property near where they propose to build these tunnels between 610 & I-10 and they've been saying that for at least 5 years. They've had meetings, designs, and neighborhood input. Still nothing. So yea, I also say maybe in another 5-10 years.

That's unfortunate. Isn't this the stretch of road that's notorious for traffic and is not appealing to the eye?

It's a pretty long stretch of road. Going from downtown and north, you have some slight topography variations after you pass up buffalo bayou and white oak bayou. It's uncommon for Houston and they've done a great job of planting many trees on the sides of the freeways. Most of which will be torn down if this expansion happens, but none of the trees where naturally there. Then the freeway is below grade for about 2 miles, this is where they propose the tunnels. Then after 610 you have pure freeway that is most likely usually not at the speed limit. That stretch after 610 isn't too appealing.
