The last several times I flew to London, half the plane was empty. Yes, literally half empty. Almost the same for Paris.
Not to Frankfurt.

If anyone has acted acrimonious and vindictive, it's been United.

Wouldnt it make more sense to run a route from AMS to IAH with a 380?

You have a hard time believing this? Lufthansa + United before this up-gauge by LH had a total of 536 seats available each day on this route -- 344 on Lufthansa's 747-400 and 242 on United's 767-400. Clearly they must have been filling most of these to warrant the A-380 (which now takes the total seats available to 768 -- with a large increase in the premium seats that sell well to the strong Houston business traveler market).

Seriously, this obsession with the conflict between the City of Houston and United gets tiring. IAH isn't exactly suffering from this...

But she does need to have a bit more savvy about the commercial aviation business because it's so vital to large urban areas like Houston. A city really needs to be supportive of its hub-carrier, not acrimonious and vindictive. That's stupid, that's bad business. I'm originally from Missouri, and I can tell you that St. Louis has never been the same since it lost TWA. Oh I guess it was already kinda in decline before that, but TWAs departure accelerated the process.
I'm also from St. Louis. And I agree completely, TWA was really all St. Louis had left. When they got bought out, the economy there went to hell. A healthy airline means a healthy economy. The economic eco system around airports in general is huge. Provides a lot of decent paying jobs.

FRA and IAH are both Star Alliance HUBS so they both offer prized onward connections for both Lufthansa and United (they also code-share on this route). AMS is not a Star alliance hub, so there is no synergy for passengers connecting at either end. Still it is a route that does very well because of the premium energy business traveler, so KLM and United both do well with their daily flights. Besides, neither KLM or United have the A380 at this time...
