Any ideas for a beach area within 4-5 hours of Houston. We wanted to go to Florida, but since we don't have many days we want to keep driving to a minimum. I've heard about Port Aransas, Corpus Christie - or we may go a little further to South Padre - that would be the max travel time. I would really like somewhere closer, my only requirements:
activities for kids
decent beach (doesn't have to be powder white sandy beach, just nicer than Galveston!)

Port Aransas is really nice. Lots to do on Mustang Island: Mustang Island State Park — Texas Parks & Wildlife Department

If you're willing to make that trip to SP, then I say go for it. You won't find much better in less travel time. Gulfport, Mississippi is the same distance from Houston, but the opinions I've heard on their beaches and accomodations are quite mixed.

I'd recommend Padre Island National Seashore, which is basically north Padre Island. You get there by traveling through Corpus. Nice beaches and there are also fun things to do in Corpus if you want to get away from the sand.

Does it have to be a "beach" beach..........like on the Gulf? Or could it be on a lake? Lots of lake options within 4 hours of Houston. I guarantee your kids would have more fun on a lake than PA.

No doesn't have to be the gulf beach - open to lakes, etc. As long as it is a fun area with lots to do. Thanks!!

Well then.......you have lots of options. Take out the map and compass, circle, and get going. With all the boating, skiing, boarding, fishing, etc. out there, I'm sure you'll find something that will be great!
