Hi there. We are seriously considering Katy as a place to live. We've been doing a lot of reading on here and to me it sounds like practically the perfect place! (disregarding the heat of coarse that I could do without! but hey there's many more important things like friendly people, safe place to raise kids, good schools (and good food is a plus too )
Speaking of food can anyone recommend good restaurants in Katy for Mexican, Chinese, Korean, Italian, Greek and Vietnamese food?

Now my other questions:
What is there to do in Katy for young kids? Is there a kids museum? indoor playgrounds? waterpark? Thanks for any info. in advance
Also could someone who is LDS tell me about the wards and activities there?

Thanks for any comments from you fine Texans.

Katy is a good choice for families as the schools there are first rate. Many of the subdivisions have mega playground facilities and pools. There is a water park on Beechnut, just east of Hwy 6 but it is closed until next spring. As soon as your kids get into school and make friends they will find out about all the kid things to do. Houston does have a children's museum but just not in Katy. As for food, you could find just about everything you mentioned right in Katy except possibly the Korean, Greek & Vietnamese but those can all be found further in to the city proper. The main thoroughfares into Katy are the Katy Freeway (I-10) and the Westpark Tollway (you will want to get an EZ tag right away as that is the only way to use the tollway). Bisecting those the main roads are Fry Rd. and Mason Rd. Fry is alive with a gazillion different stores and restaurants (be sure to try Palio's Pizza on S. Fry). If you will be working very far from Katy you have my sympathies for the stinky commute you will be facing - gridlock on I-10. As I am not Mormon, I can't speak to what you will find here but I am very confident that you will be able to find what you are looking for. Try a Google search for Houston. Good luck and welcome.

Thanks for the info. redrover. I won't be working in Houston (I'll be working at home not getting paid ) but my husband will. We wouldn't be moving there for about 2 years yet as he is still in school. I've heard that they are building somekind of new overpass or something by 2008 that will hopefully help with the traffic?? It sounds like a great place and I'm really looking forward to visiting in the future. Thanks again!

They could be talking about the over pass to Westpark toll road. If so, its completed and hasn't helped a thing. Too much road construction all at the same time. Traffic is a nightmare in Houston/Katy.

Here's a couple restaurants to keep in mind. Everyone raves about Lupe Tortilla. Blake's BBQ has great everything. Las Palmas has some great Tex Mex.

Here are two of my favorite Mexican restaurants:
Las BullBoxer31 Mexican Grill - Katy, Houston, Pearland & Lake Jackson, TX (broken link)
El Jarrito Mexican Restaurant - Katy, Tx - 77450 (broken link)

You will have a large selection in Mexican food from Tex-Mex to authentic, just try around and you'll too have your favorite.

As for stuff for the kids, I have three kids under the age of 6. (yes, i got the tv fixed ;-) so I think were done) If you live in Cinco Ranch or have friends there, they have several water activites, pools, large kids pool, small type water park, beach club. There are several things for kids to do in Katy; here's a website with a list of a few.

Katy Texas - Birthdays, Parties, Clowns, Party Rentals, Fun Places

if you haven't already looked at the schools, this is a good website also:

Buy, Sell or Rent a New or Re-sale Home - Chron.com: Real Estate - Houston Chronicle (http://www.chron.com/class/realestate/homefront/reportcards.html - broken link)

hope this helps!

Katy as the perfect place?! If you like crowds, traffic congestion, bugs, great restaurants and shopping, Katy is your place. If you are looking for a peaceful place with beautiful scenery, this is not it. I will sell you my house in Cinco Ranch for under $185,000. I will miss my church because we have many great churches here and the people in it are wonderful. But get out in traffic, and you forget the nice sermon message about loving your neighbor.

That's why I love it on the North side of I-10. Cinco area is about as bad as the Galleria traffic congestion

Default Memorial Parkway Subdivision

Hello,
I am thinking of buying in the Memorial Park Subdivision. I just wanted to Know if anyone has inside info on it. Is it a decent place to live? are the schools good. Please tell me what kind of people live there. It looks like a nice place and it is south of the katy freeway so I am hoping it is a nice place.
A reply would be appreciated.

Thank You,
JIM

I have lived in Cinco for two years and there there are only 2 bad spots, Mason rd north of Highland Knolls (which is outside of Cinco anyway) and the intersection at Fry around HEB and Home Depot (which again, is not within Cinco Ranch boundaries.)

It is VERY peaceful in Cinco and south Katy in general. My only experience in N Katy is shopping along I-10, so I can't tell you about that traffic (but Fry IS bad, with all the stores, but that's to be expected. You learn to get to the stores without actually getting on Fry).
