I'm not much of a gardener, but in our south-facing backyard we have planted drift roses, knock-out roses, and gardenias ~ all three have thrived for 4 years. As for HOAs and landscaping, you might want to check with yours before starting. Some are unbelievably restricting and some are more relaxed about landscaping. I know that not all HOAs allow vegetable gardens so would hate for you to go to all that work only to be told you have to remove it. If you don't have a copy of your community's governing documents, ask your HOA for them. In our community, landscaping requirements are contained in the ACGs (Architectural Control Guidelines) and CCRs (Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions). Good luck!

Thanks! I will check with my husband to see if we've been given those documents yet. Glad to hear your gardenia. Has done well. They are tricky!
