Default Which is bigger? Sugarland or The Woodlands?

I know for years The Woodlands has been smaller than Sugarland, but i think TW may be equal by now. So that leads me to this question...

Why hasn't TW earned a place as a principal city? There's many corporations there now?

Maybe some of yall urban demographic whiz kids can help me understand this one?

The Woodlands is not a city but a township which somehow makes a difference but I'm not sure how.

Whenever I have asked the people who live there why Woodlands does not become a city, people get very defensive for some reason. They do NOT want to become a city. I think it has something to do with taxes, not sure.

Sugar Land has about 80, 000 people

Both Pearland and The Woodlands have passed Sugar Land and Baytown in Population with both nearing 100,000 people.

But the Principle City is not simply based on population.
Economics come into play too, that is why the second biggest city- Pasadena is not in the title.

I am sure that if The Woodlands were incorporated the title of the metro would change from Houston- Sugar Land- Baytown to Houston- The Woodlands- Sugar Land

Houston metro is pretty soon going to go from a metro with only two cities above 100K to a metro with about 7 or 8 cities passed 100k as The Woodlands (94K), then Pearland (91K), then League City(84K), then Sugarland (80K) then Baytown (72K) pass 100k. Cypress would be an 8th and the 3rd largest city in the metro if it was incorporated because it is a CDP of 123K

Missouri City, Conroe, Atascocita (CDP) and Spring (CDP) all have about 55-70K people and growing quickly

If I had to guess... it's because they are getting tax dollars from Houston somehow.

Pretty cool info. I thought someone said that Cypress had over 500,000 people.

For sure, land-mass because I'm looking at a big map at work. I know The Woodlands originally was smaller than Sugarland until they started expanding to 242, east of 45 North (Harper's Landing) and Kuykendahl. Population, I think Woods have a lot more now since they started building not only homes, but condos, retirement homes and modern-style apartments. Since I do a lot of cycling around The Woodlands, the Wharf area (Dairy Queen- Grogan's Mill) is going to get a lot more residents and they are building more Northeast style homes around Lake Woodlands.

Each city has people around it that is not in the area the census uses as the official census designated area.

For example, the official city of Katy has about 10,000 people but the area known as the Katy area has 250-500k people.

Spring is a a small city of about 15K, the census designated area has about 5 times that number and the Spring area has about twice that.

So yes the area that would be the City of Cypress if it was incorporated would be about 120K, its 'suburbs' if you can call it that would be more than that.

It must also be noted that Cypress and Katy has overlap in their areas. If you go by those who say Katy has 500K then Cypress has a lot less than 500K, if you are with those who say Cypress has about 500K then obviously their version of Katy would be smaller.

Atascocita is also a much larger area if you include all of what people call that area. Same thing with Pearland

It all means nothing though, because it is all Houston. Some areas people call the Katy area are within the Houston City limits and you know that even if some area was given to Katy, the area in the city limits would stay put.
