I think it depends how much you can tolerate driving and possible traffic. I went to University of St. Thomas in the evening and I had a student in my classes who was driving from Beaumont. That's quite the commute.

I also used the Hardy each day and found a way around the 59/I-10 back up by cutting around the freeway!
So how long did it take you using the Hardy Toll Road and do you remember what that total cost was each way for the toll?

If I had a class at 8 I would leave at 6:45. If I had a class at 10 I could leave at 9. When I had a class that ended at 4 I would be home by 5:15. I can't remember what the tolls cost but it was 2 each way and I have an EZ tag. I also had to fill up my 15 gallon SUV 2 times during the week.

I commuted from Dallas to Austin for 1.5 years to finish my masters degree, so I'm probably the wrong person to ask. Personally, I don't think commuting is that big a deal to finish an educational goal.

I did this before there were so many distance options - maybe I would have chosen an online degree if the possibility had existed then.

Are you serious? Can I ask why you did that? You just didn't want to move?

i don't think that is unreasonable for a masters. a few schools in houston and austin have weekend programs just for that reason.

Yeah, for a Master's level of education I can totally see that. My Masters is available at UH, but the preeminent schools for my degree are UT and A&M. Austin is just too darn far to commute, but College Station is not all that far so I'm going there. It's reverse traffic flow and the longest it took for me to get there was 1.5 hours.

With the stiff competition in this economy I'll gladly drive a little extra for a Masters from a major University. It all pays off when the companies are coming to see you and you not hunting down the companies. I'll take that tradeoff all day.

I started out commuting by plane but it was such a pain, I switched to commuting via car. Usually I would try to drive in on Monday morning and drive home on Thursday evening.

It was highly disruptive for my personal life but very good for my career.

Complicated situation with a relationship at the time. I was gambling that if I completed my masters degree at UT Austin, I would meet professors who would recommend me for a highly competitive doctoral program there. The gamble worked.
