Fancy or not, what would you consider your absolute favorite? I'm really trying to scope out hidden gems.

I love Top Sushi. I would go there everyday if I could afford it.

El Gallo de Jalisco in the Heights. Extremely good and affordable. $3-4 a plate. Heaven.

Haven't been to Kanomwan for many years, but would love to give the old Thai Nazi another try :-)

This thread is good for me (I hope) because Houston is so saturated with generic chain restaurants.

E-Tao (despite its location in the Galleria) seems promising to me, at least as a choice that isn't way out Bellaire (which I guess is the best place to go for real chinese food).

I usually have low expectations for "fancy" places, buta Brasserie 19 on West Gray surprised me a bit the 2 times I went there. Also, Merida on Navigation is still good, despite the changes over the years (ownership and cooks).

Rattan on Eldridge - great Pan American food from an owner of a good chinese restaurant in China town. Its in the energy corrido just south of Buffalo Bayou.

Also, Il Mistrale, a french place almost next door to Rattan is good restaurant and more.... Benedicts on Memorial across from the West Lake office complex is excellent as well.

Niko Niko's. The food is pretty good, it's always packed, it has a northern city ambiance and it's in a great area to walk around after eating a lot of food.
