Well, if you think about it, everyone except Native Americans are immigrants. Who comes up with this stuff?

Touche'. I agree with that, having been born in the Netherlands.

a huge metropolitan city with an international O&G business hub which is also in the south - that isn't surprising or seem to be outrageous. 22% . so 78% are native born Americans.

Not surprising given the presence of the oil and aerospace industries. Let alone our neighbors to the South.

Ronnie, people from Dallas qualify.

I like the fact that we have so many people here from other places - makes it interesting.

Just to put this in perspective..........

I live in Toronto, was born here, and my ancestors came to Canada in 1801.

Toronto has a fifty percent Immigrant population. So about HALF of the people now living in Toronto, were born in a foreign country.

We speak about 120 languages in this city, and of the 5400 Toronto Police Services uniform officers, 30 percent are FLUENT in another language, besides English and French, which are our official languages , in Canada. They get an extra 15 points on the entrance exam for being multi-lingual.

We have dozens of weekly foreign language newspapers, and 5 daily Toronto newspapers in Chinese, Russsian, Hindi, Italian, and Portugese, as well as four in English. Radio and TV stations that broadcast in a different language, every hour, around the clock, and our utility bills are printed in 40 languages , so that you can choose which one you want to get delivered to your email address.

Expressed as a percentage of our national population ( 34 mllion people live in Canada) we accept more Immigrants than any other country in the world, each year ( 250 thousand a year ). They are investigated, and vetted, for education, work skills and medical health, BEFORE they are approved, to come here. They get additional points on their application, if they have a 4 year University degree, in a field that is "In Demand " in Canada, and they must pay to be tested re their ability to speak, read and write, and understand one of our two official languages. They have to score above 70 on each part of that testing series.

Immigrants to Canada are seen as valuable people, and we strive to get the best ones, who will have the most sucess here. Their children are excellent students, and graduate from University at a higher rate than kids born in Canada do. Canada has the highest percentage, in the world, of adults who hold at least one 4 year University degree, at 53 percent of our total population. In the USA that number is about 33 percent.

About 85 percent of our Immigrants become Canadian CITIZENS, within 8 years of their arrival in Canada.

Isn't it odd, that two countries that are located right next door to each other, have such opposite attitudes about legal Immigrants ? In Canada we welcome them..... In the USA, not so much.

Could it be the manner in which we select them here , that makes the difference ?

Jim B

Toronto.
