It's Missouri City of the 21st century to me....only that kids now aren't as hungry to achieve more and there's no Willowridge HS as the focus of the area meaning a well-rounded school with statewide appeal

Dawson is alright but it's missing something

I had seen a big billboard about a black mega church in Pearland when I was there last month.

the billboard you may be referring to is probably the Silverlake Church, led by Pastor Reginald DeVaughn, on Cullen across from Dawson High school..

I guess you could say that Pearland is similiar to Missouri city of the 1980's, with the exception that its not split among racial lines and it has thousands of square feet of commercial development that draws shoppers from the older areas in Missouri City.

Has Willowridge met the state standard academic ratings in the last five years? I lost count how many years they have been academically unaccaptable, but fbisd has a portion of shadow creek ranch, however from my understanding no high school age kids over there attend Willowridge for the reasons mentioned.

The western part of Pearland is like a lot of other places in the Houston area right now. It's diverse almost to the point to where you should let your race completely leave your thought process. The people that move in there, in their 20's and 30's, are not going to even care what race you are. If you move to older part of Pearland, maybe. If you move to the older part of Katy, maybe. If you move to the newer part of these suburbs, you might as well forget that you are black, because your neighbors already have.

Glenda Dawson high school was one of the few area high schools to make Newsweeks list of best high schools. It came in a 332 out of 500. Houston had 6 high schools on the list. Dallas had 8 (and had the number one and number two schools, but they are magnet schools). Austin also had 6.

America's Best High Schools 2011 - Newsweek and The Daily Beast

In 2012, there are some differences and Dawson, while still on the list came in 805. Dallas's magnet schools came in 2 and 4 instead of 1 and 2. Houston has 18 high schools on the list and the one you mention is not there.

I have a couple of friends from Pearland. And there all black. Pearland has a good amount of black people. I mean it's right next to the southside of Houston which is predominately black.

statewide what? We didn't have that crap and turned out just fine in the 90s....we had parents who cared and a community that came together and not worried about the size of the house, etc....your teachers were your neighbors.

Just remember, Willowridge was predominately white in the 80s before they disappeared like rats when the lights come on. Dulles, like pearland, was the lone school in the area before Willowridge came on board to absorb the growth...Dawson is following the same path as they attract the same HISD border jumpers who left Madison and Yates for Willowridge.

Once HS #3 comes on in Pearland, Dawson will be turned over to the dominant race and left on its own until the area changes.

History truly repeats itself in Houston....white flight always happens
