I grew up in Houston and learned to drive in Houston. There is some road rage (like my father, although it's only bad if you're in the car with him), but I went to Washington DC over spring break this year and THEY ARE CRAZY!! I've lived in Arlington for the last 6 years (population 300,000), and coming from Houston it was a major culture shock. I always know (on those lonely I-45 drives Friday evenings) when I'm in Houston because the drivers get crazy (as compared to Arlington).

Houston is a great place to live. I grew up there, moved to Dallas a year ago, now my husband is getting transferred to Oklahoma City. Houston people are friendly and easy to get to know. You won't have any problem making friends. People are really down to earth compared with the Dallas crowd. There are great places to eat, good shopping and the cost of living is very low. I know how you feel when people warn you about Houston, that' is what is happening to me with this Oklahoma City move. Good luck, don't worry!

We just moved here last January and we are very happy. We came here from California and found that everyone was very welcoming. The schools are much better for our children and we feel safe where we live. Yes it is hot. We have adjusted to that and very much enjoyed having our first change of season today. (We actually had to wear a jacket today) We spend a lot of time exploring the different areas. Yes there is traffic but compared to where we used to live it is nothing and you adapt and get used to it. Our commute times here are much shorter than they were in Ca. Don't let other people try to get you down. You need to choose what is right for you and your family. Other people may think they know what is best but ultimately it is up to you. Good luck with your decision.

By the way, my sister just moved from Dallas to SF. She loves the weather but hates the fact that they had to spend 1.2 million on a home that you can get for 200k in Houston. She can't get over all of the scary homeless people EVERYWHERE. Her husband makes a great living, but now she has to go back to work. She calls me crying every day and wants to leave as soon as possible. As my sister says "Yeah it's beautiful, but it is not worth the price!"
