If you were considering a second/vacation home - would you ever consider having it on Lake Livingston? Why or why not?

I've asked about this before, with various areas. We absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE Utah. And we are seriously considering getting a second home there in the future (I would move there in a heartbeat if I could). We are actually renting a house there for a month this summer to scout out areas. But I have young children (7 and 3 yrs old), and really wonder how we would utilize it. Major holidays, most of the summer, etc. Not to mention logistics/cost of flying. etc. But hubby works with several people who have second homes there, and he's talked extensively with them about it.

We went camping on Lake Livingston last weekend, and I never realized how pretty it was up in that area. Especially around Trinity/Coldspring. The thing that bugs me about being here in Houston is the heat of the summer and the bugs. But having a lake house within 1.5 hours of me I feel would be a great way to give my kids a different kind of life on weekends, during the summer, etc. We would be able to drive up there anytime.

So would you get a lake home? I also really like Canyon Lake, but it's a little further (4 hr drive) whereas Lake Livingston is about 90 minutes from me.

Just remember, once they turn 12, they won't want to go,and you'll see your place 3 times a year. Even the nicest kid will make you life unpleasant over this issue.

Just rent for a month a year in the dream place, buy when the last one is 2 years from college.
JMHO. A summer month on a cool, mountain lake beats a summer on a buggy, sweaty, Texas lake with teens and mega- eye rolling. Normally they don't fight you if its an awesome location with a finite time commitment. Not saying live for your kids, but this issue can take the joy of out of a weekend home and raise your blood pressure.

Lot of uneducated bible thumpers around there but if that sort doesn't bother you then it is a nice area. Have you checked out Sam Rayburn lake area?

They're very nice up there. My dad recently died and my mom is up there alone now, but thankfully, surrounded by wonderful neighbors. As far as "bible thumping," well, thank God for that. We are Christians and proud of it. I'm happy that she has terrific, Christian neighbors.

Big difference between Christians and bible thumpers. Shoving your religion down everyone's throats it's not terrific. Being kind to your neighbors and supporting someone who is grieving is wonderful no matter what religion someone is or even if they are non religious.

People who think its okay to knock everyone who is religious or even mentions religion is not terrific either. Needs to be a mutual respect. So if your neighbor invites you to go to church with them on a Sunday, do you classify them as a bible thumper?

Looks like this great question might be turning into another Christian hate thread. We;re used to it. Well back to your question. Lake Livingston is and will always be close to my heart. I owned lake front property for many years in the Camilla section of Coldspring . We drove our RV there so often to stay for weekends. We also spent a great deal of time in Wolf Creek Park which was voted the 2nd most beautiful RV park in America. We were forced to sell the land due to economic reasons but also because some random letter in the mail offered me much more then I paid in 2005.

The poster who said to just rent is correct if you don't have money to be buying a 2nd home. I highly recommend buying or renting in Cape Royal. Especially if you play Golf. I love Cape Royal. I would move there full time if there was work around there. This city life sucks deeply. Worst traffic on earth. Give me downtown Coldspring and the slow life any day. Even the bible thumpers. About 15 minutes away you have the city of Livingston which has so many GREAT restaurants. Oh and I can name them all.

On to Utah. I am plenty familiar with that too. Spending almost a dozen years in Las Vegas, Cedar City especially and all of southern Utah was our run away most weekends with the RV. It was only a 3 hour drive from Vegas. We sure got to know many people and so seriously talked of moving there but decided we would not be given a fair chance at fitting in because you simply had to be a Mormon and I was not willing to be one. They are very nice people though. I know Cedar City like the back of my hand. Wonderful place. But how you gonna travel all the way to Utah often enough to make it worth while? Stick close to home.
