I am need for a reasonable interior design professional or any ideas to locate such resource. If you have any personal experience with any design professionals please do share. We have a contemporary look to our home and we would like to keep it that way.

Thanks in advance

You might want to look on houzz for local professionals, can easily see their previous work etc. No idea what kind of penetration it hits in terms of market share, but might be worth a shot.

Interior design depends on what do you want to do ? Maybe you have to select the designing style which feels you comfortable, modern, eclectic, country etc. or combination, than think the steps and plan the each one ... painting the wall, furniture, floor, lighting ...

HGTV is a good call. Go to the Highland Village. Restoration Hardware, Crate and Barrel, West Elm, Z Gallerie, and the Pottery Barn are all right next to each other. You can try Ikea if you are on a tight budget. A good place to get decorations is Marshalls Homegoods. There is one off West Gray pretty close to Highland. You can also try High Fashion in midtown. Pick up a color palette from Sherwin Williams. No need to pay someone. It really is not that hard to decorate. Go to Barnes and Noble. Look through some magazines. And no, I am not gay!

Get a copy of the free Houston House and Home monthly magazine at one of the Inner Loop grocery stores. There's usually an article by a local interior designer who actually works with what her clients already have, instead of pushing them to spend a lot of money on a complete re-do. The magazine also contains a lot of ideas, resources, ads for services.
